How to Know Which Products Make You the Most Profit
Knowing which products make you the most profit is different from knowing which ones sell the most. Many shop owners confuse these two things, ending up focusing their time and money on products that move a lot but earn little.
Volume is not the same as profit
A product can sell every day and still give you a very thin margin. Another might sell less often, but each sale leaves you a much bigger profit. If you only look at how much you sell without looking at how much you earn, you might be making the wrong calls about what to promote, what to buy more of, and what deserves space in your store.
How to calculate the real profit per product
A product's profit isn't just the selling price minus the purchase cost. You should also factor in other related expenses, like the time it takes to sell it or the space it occupies in your inventory. Still, the most important first step is having clarity, for each product, on:
- How much it cost you.
- How much you sell it for.
- How much profit you actually keep.
Without this per-product data, it's impossible to know if your business is truly profitable or just looks busy.
Give visibility to what's most worth selling
Once you identify your best-margin products, it makes sense to give them more spotlight: place them somewhere visible, recommend them to your customers, include them in promotions that boost sales without sacrificing your profit. It's not about dropping everything else, but about knowing where to focus your effort.
Beware of "selling just to sell"
It's tempting to focus on what turns over the most because it keeps the register busy. But if that activity doesn't translate into real profit, your business might be working hard to earn little.
Also check turnover
Margin isn't everything: a product with a good profit but that barely sells might not be worth keeping in large quantities. The ideal is to find a balance between products that rotate well and products that leave a good margin, so your inventory works in your favor.
Review this regularly
Product profitability can change over time: costs shift, competitor prices shift, customer tastes shift. That's why it pays to periodically check which products still earn you the most, and adjust your strategy accordingly.
Finzafy shows you which products earn you the most profit and exactly how much you make on each one, so you can make decisions based on numbers, not guesses.
